Sustainability is more important now than ever!

The talk about sustainability is becoming increasingly visible in all areas of our lives, but what does sustainability mean, and why is it important? In simple terms, Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs and at the same time educating them to do the same for future generations. Besides natural resources available to all of us, we also need social and economic resources. The goal in developing sustainable world is to create strategies that preserve the long-term viability of People, Planet and Profit Over the years, this idea of sustainability has been referred to as ‘the ‘Triple Bottom Line’.

Often misunderstood, sustainability is regularly considered to only refer to energy sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. However, sustainability is more than just kind of a buzzword and it’s more than just environmentalism. While protection of the environment is part of sustainability, that’s not where sustainability ends. The concept of sustainability also covers economic development and social equity.

The three Pillars of sustainability are

  • Environmental Sustainability

  • Economic Sustainability

  • Social Sustainability

Adopting sustainable practices, large and small, has the potential to make a huge impact on the environment, society, and the economy. The end goal is a world where every human has access to basic resources, we use resources at a manageable rate, so as not to run out of them, and maintain economic development.

While the sustainability is most important but ignoring social responsibility would not let us achieve the goal for sustainability. It builds a crucial ethical stand, in which members are accountable for fulfilling their public duty. Our actions must benefit the whole of society. In this way, we can create the right balance between economic growth and the well-being of society and the environment.

Corporations are increasingly adopting socially responsible actions, activities, policies, and processes. A corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy is beneficial not only for a corporation's bottom line but also for its employees, stakeholders, consumers, and for communities, the environment and society at large. It is, therefore, imperative to assess and know the extent to which a corporation is socially responsible.

A CSR index will indicate the extent to which a particular corporation has social responsibility and in which areas it lacks such responsibility, if any. Strengths and weaknesses of various components of the model will also indicate characteristics at a certain level which will enable the corporation to pinpoint what exactly is required to improve its responsibility towards people, the environment and society at large.

Effectively communicating your social and sustainable efforts is critical to your organization's reputation management and goodwill. The positive role an organization plays as a corporate citizen - locally and globally is important to its stakeholders and impacts consumer behaviour and organization's perceived value in the marketplace.
